Like A Coffee meets the University of Salerno

Every time companies and young talent meet is an asset entailing food for thought on the future as well as on the existing opportunities, and the ones yet to come.

The opportunities for students to get in contact with the real and practical world of work increase steeply, thanks to the technical skills acquired during their learning paths.

Last 8th November we met IT students and some professors of the Faculty of Information Technology at the Università di Salerno.

During the first part of the lecture we focused on innovative ecosystems and on the working model of the Like A Coffee community. The core of our presentation has been mainly the Talent to Expert Journey with a specific focus on the mentoring activities and on the experimental projects we are currently developing with the talents who are working along us right now.

Professor Vittorio Scarano, who kindly hosted us and is also responsible for the outgoing students guidance, granted us a brief interview at the end of our lecture where he shared his impressions.

IoT hands-on workshop in Latvia

Last October Like A Coffee was at the Faculty of Information Technology in LLU is Latvia University of Agriculture – Jelgava (Latvia) to hold an IoT hands-on workshop with the kind and active cooperation of the leading researcher Aleksejs Zacepins and the LLU Dean Gatis Vitols.

“These workshop days were an interesting experiment and a workbench for

our IoT division”, says Attilio, Leader of Steam Port IoT Lab,

partner of Like A Coffee.

The workshop, which covered two days, included both a theoretical introduction to IoT and physical computing using embedded computers such as Raspberry Pi and a practical part aimed at letting students learn how to set up a little linux box on a Raspberry Pi or similar by accessing to external interfaces via the Python programming language.

“These two days were an excellent opportunity for students to finally see the combination of theoretical lecture with some practice.”, says Aleksejs, LLU ITF Docent.

Thirteen motivated IT students challenged themselves with this innovative topic, especially in the practical MQTT client-to-server messaging exercise when Attilio and Aleksejs divided them into four small groups, each with a specific task to accomplish.

In particular, on the one hand two groups were asked to design and prototype a Client, that is to set up a Raspberry Pi based circuit which included input hard keys on a breadboard and  LEDs for visual output, controlled by a Python script, also developed by them.

On the other hand two other groups were asked to deal with the Server side by developing a software in Python and to validate the client code so that the Server could send a positive or negative reply to the client according to the accuracy of the code produced.

Both Client and Server were communicating data through a third Raspberry Pi, acting as a broker to manage all the sent messages.

“I enjoyed it very much because I learned new things and I had the chance to set up  Raspberry Pi with Raspbian. This workshop was actually an extra opportunity to learn something out of the typical university program”, says Karlis, LLU IT Student.

Like A Coffee has the intention to further develop new IoT topics, related to MCU programming or to 3D modeling via virtual workshops or, why not, a nice idea could be the usage of a telepresence robot that could be a workshop’s topic itself . Stay tuned!

Accelerate your talent within the Like a Coffee community

Innovation ecosystem and community

The sharing strategy to generate opportunities.

In this rapidly changing age where work is the output of multiple minds, we are moving towards the creation of an ecosystem which involves the smartest people for them to be an asset and to add value to the organization.

Innovation to be truly open needs a community environment which is more and more able to generate common visions and opportunities.

Community Like a Coffee

Its founding principles.

We are the result of different experiences, different personal stories, different educational and professional paths. Web and mobile development, design, IoT, Industry 4.0, mobile and design thinking, social recruiting are some of the present themes within the Like A Coffee community, just to name a few.

Our goal is to gather the different competencies to find innovative solutions to smarten people’s lives.

Mentoring Approach

Grow your know-how thanks to the support of the community.

The mentoring work within the Like A Coffee community is carried out passionately towards the talent coming from the universities. As an example, in the following video Antonio Torre, one of our mentors, explains our approach.

For the talent accessing the Like A Coffee community, professional growth means learning by doing and by working on our projects to apply his or her university knowledge and, at the same time, to implement the acquired eLearning knowledge during the Like A Coffee “Talent to Expert Journey”.

Projects can be experimental, as the Preso project where Giuseppe, as a new talent, is currently working on its mobile app development which goes hand in hand with the IoT device.

Growth means also developing a final thesis together with a concrete project which could turn out to be useful for the talent professional process.

This is the case of Luigi Cutolo, who is about to graduate in Information Technology at the University of Salerno.

Talent to Expert journey

The importance of the learning journey to deal with the practical world of work

When the talent is about to graduate or has just graduated, he or she generally does not feel he or she has the necessary practical experience to face the present world of work. The Like A Coffee community is active to this end by supporting the young talent during his or her professional growth process by means of a dedicated learning path in order to help him or her become an expert developer to work on customer projects on an international scale.

On 8th November we will be at the Università di Salerno where Professor Vittorio Scarano hosts us to present the Like A Coffee community and the projects we are currently carrying out.

How has the project evolved over time? [VIDEO]

The project has gone a long way from its original version.

We started with a series of case prototypes, believe it or not, over 10 up to now.

The one we showed in the campaign is just a prototype and we are still working on new versions of it. The Preso device interacts constantly with the PresoApp, which allows you to create a Preso network.

The good thing about an IoT device development is the continuous testing both on the software side and on the hardware performance side.

The Preso evolution is still in an early-stage. Support us during our first Kickstarter campaign to drive it forward!

Talent build-up during the Preso development [VIDEO]

Giuseppe is one of the junior developers we met at the beginning of this year.

His Master IT studies are about to end and at the same time he’s living a working experience following the Talent journey within the Like A Coffee community.

In this video Giuseppe tells us about his overall experience during the development project of the Preso device and app (see Preso website link!…) as well as with the other team members, such as designers, project managers, IoT specialists and testers.

A  real 360° experience for someone like him who is coming from the university world.

He then highlights the paramount role and added value of his mentors during his build-up path.

The following video has been shot at a live coding session when our Preso team members met in person to work side by side.

“Even though we are remote web developers, we meet in person from time to time for working together” says Antonio Torre, mentor of the Like A Coffee community.
